In 1961 a married couple, Betty and Barney Hill, were driving back to their home in New Hampshire after a summer vacation. They noticed a strange aerial light following their car. The light maneuvered in ways that were atypical and unidentifiable… Well, to make a long story short, they were abducted by aliens.
The incident, despite physical evidence including missing time, strange marks on their bodies, physical evidence on the car, and a free-floating anxiety that would come and go - along with the eerie feeling that something out of the ordinary happened on that drive home, remained dormant until pieces of what may have happened began to surface in their dreams. After consulting with several psychologists they both agreed to undergo hypnotic regression. When they went public with their story it turned into one of the most famous UFO abduction cases of the modern era. It spawned a best-selling book, “The Interrupted Journey,” by John G. Fuller, and a blockbuster Hollywood movie starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons.
Investigations were launched by every branch of the military as well as other government agencies, think tanks, and universities. Even the NAACP launched an investigation - Barney and Betty were both members, and were active in the civil rights movement in New England, and Barney was a member of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. Apparently, the NAACP feared the whole thing could have been a COINTELPRO operation to discredit the Civil Rights movement! I have not been able to find any public information on that investigation.
Transcripts and tapes of the hypnotic regression sessions were appropriately horrifying and confirmed the thesis of alien abduction.
This soundscape, “Dream Recovery,” is based on those hypnotic regression sessions. It is a recording of a live, improvised performance.
